On Leigh’s Nightstand

 I am not the only one singing praises for Tana French’s The Likeness.

“Best Novel of the Year” {PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, SALON.COM, THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR}

“Crime Fiction Favorite” { LOS ANGELES TIMES}
“Runner-up Best Thriller of the Year” {NEW YORK MAGAZINE}
“Best Mystery” {SEATTLE TIMES}

This is the story of Dublin Murder Detective, Cassie Maddox coerced into an undercover gig by the blood-spilled body of her likeness who carries ID of Cassie’s former undercover alias. Detective Maddox compelled to solve the murder of her college coed lookalike, takes the case in part to regain a lost portion of herself.

What kept my often-wandering attention on this novel was its main character Detective Maddox (known undercover as Lexie,) a gal with grit and wit.  We’d love to see her dossier on LookingGlass Lane. French managed to create complex, charming, intellectual characters that felt real to me.  I have started and stopped many a “famous” novel for flat character development and trite themes. This one had stick.

You’ll enjoy Edgar Award-winning, Tana French’s psychological clever plot wrapped tight like kite twine, a delight to unravel. Ultimately, I deemed French “totally readable” and I am tracking down her preceding novel, In the Woods

Enjoy!

    Yes, this should be a regular thing. Either serialise the rest of it, or just more nightstand excerpts.

    Jen,
    Because I knew you were still nursing coffee, I PG-ed the swear words. Come back to visit and I read some Jonas Brothers to you! :)

    Keith,
    Thanks for having that eagle eye. Perhaps you’d be interested in a post as “Lookout Boy” on the Lane. Yes, the knee is fine. Time wouldn’t allow this busy gal a redo. Glad to amuse!

    John,
    Indeed. That was about all the reading I got in this week so our serial would be rather stretched out. Thanks and if you’re very good I may pull out a Shakespearian soliloquy from the nightstand. Many of which I have tried to drink away from high school English to no avail. ;)
